Did the Pismo 4Runner Jamboree 3 in August.
It somehow seemed that there was less people than last year, but I definitely had more fun than last time. The first time camping out with Teresa and Bliksem, so I had to take the whole “boksendice” with. At least I can say we had the best setup camp. We got there Friday night and setup the camp. It was good seeing some old faces and meeting some new people. Steve Schaeffer was definitely a very interesting character, and definitely nicer in person. Here is the official site and everybody that was going to join http://www.4runners.org/pismo4rj3/
After breakfast we went out and played in the dunes on Saturday morning. We did the normal run of Comp Hill and then some other dunes. Later we ran big bowl and tried to run some other bowls which where more like dunes sideways. Eventually we went looking for the nice big dune to climb. On our way Milton got stuck on a dune and it eventually took Scott, Mark and myself to get him out. After some searching we found it (I have it on my GPS now for future reference). The dune was a pretty good challenge, especially the soft side (which some people kept avoiding ;) ).
We then headed back for lunch, and Charles got called back to go help tow a Jeep out. I went with him and it took Bud and myself to get the Jeep out. After lunch we headed back out to hit some more dunes. We did some sand racing which is always a blast, especially since everybody is battling to get traction on the sand. Steve joined us as we were about to head out, he first had to get his belt on the LC fixed. He tried his hand at racing the 60 and found out why they are not used in Paris Dakar. Showing good spirit we headed back to the big dune to see how the 60 would do. The sand had really softened up by late afternoon and everybody had a tough time making the climb and some couldn’t do it anymore.
We then headed back to camp and we had a nice braai and some more campfire chat. Later the evening the guys camping behind us got nicely sauced and started burning crates and chairs with the occasional table thrown in. Then they started shooting each other with fireworks, oh well I suppose Darwin will kick in sometime.
Sunday morning we packed after breakfast and cleaned up site. Scott, Mark and I headed up to Pozo where we had lunch at the saloon. Really a place worthwhile stopping. After that we headed up to Hi Mountain lookout and were greeted by some young blonde interns (well worth the trip). You are supposed to be able to see the Pismo dunes and Ocean from there, but it was too hazy. The view was still good though. On our way back Scott and I did the first portion of Garcia Ridge, but had to turn back due to time constraints and lack of motivation to air down and go up it with a full cargo load. That looks like a very interesting trail and we will definitely have to do it some time.
